The “Great Taste Awards” are lauded as the “Oscars of the Food World” – and in many respects they are. I was recently privileged to sit on one of the judging panels at the Great Taste Awards at the Real Food Festival. (All the judges give of their own time completely free of charge to do this, by the way, despite the entry fees generating a revenue of £125,000 – I am sure there are some published accounts of where this money goes!)

The heat is on with So!Go

To be or not to be… Local?

Over the last few years there has been a lot of talk of local food. Farm shops have opened up selling produce from within a 30 miles radius. Farmers’ Markets have multiplied where only those within a few miles of the market are allowed to participate. Even the supermarkets have jumped on the local bandwagon and have regional buyers looking for regional products. (more…)
Independents v Multiples
This wasn’t the intended subject for this week, but I was so annoyed by a meeting I had yesterday, I had to write something! A prospective supplier came to see me with a view to our stocking his range of products. They were good products and eminently suitable for our customer base of delicatessens, farm shops, food halls etc. Of the range of 12 products, unfortunately 3 were stocked in most of the major multiples including Asda and Tesco. National BBQ Week 25-31st May
The nation is holding its breath for a good summer in 2009. After two miserable summers, we need something to cheer us up in the dark days of recession.
Not only does the summer weather generally put people in a better mood, it also means they spend more money.
